Classic Monster Fun: How to Win at the Horrified Board Game Other Tips
In the Horrified board game, players form a monster-fighting task force. Using Perk cards and helpful items gathered along the way, you’ll join forces to accomplish the tasks required to vanquish the beasts that have overrun your village.
Horrified Board Game Sleeves
The Horrified board game comes with 55 cards, including 30 Monster, 20 Perk and 5 Reference cards. You have several good alternatives for sleeving your Horrified cards:
- Mayday Games Standard Card Sleeves (MDG-7041
- Mayday Games Premium Card Sleeves (MDG-7077)
- Horrified: American Monsters Card Sleeve Bundle (MDG-0103A)
Both the Standard and Premium Mayday Games Card Sleeves perfectly fit all Horrified game cards, measuring 63.5 x 88 mm. The sleeves contain no PVC and are acid-free. While the Premium sleeves are thicker, the Standard variety is still a very good choice that is easy on the budget. Standard sleeves are sold in packs of 100, while Premium sleeve packs usually contain 50 sleeves. The Horrified: American Monsters sleeve bundle may offer you the best value, with two 50-card packs of Premium sleeves.
Playing and Winning the Horrified Board Game
A typical game will include three monsters, but you can decrease or increase the difficulty level by using fewer or more monsters. At the start of the game, you choose your foes from among these classic monsters:
- Dracula
- The Mummy
- Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein
- The Invisible Man
- Creature from the Black Lagoon
- The Wolf Man
Most of the villains must be either trapped, entombed or run out of town. However, the Wolf Man can be cured while Frankenstein and his Bride must be integrated peacefully into human society.
The Hero phase of a turn is when you and your team take heroic action to shepherd Villagers around the town and to make progress on your monster-bashing tasks. This is the point when you will try to gain helpful items and help Villagers make their journeys so you can earn Perk cards. Perk cards help you make progress in battling the monsters.
During the Monster phase of each turn, the baddies get their chance to wreak havoc. A Monster card will direct you to place specific items, react to a certain event or move a specific monster to a space where it can attack people. Remember that monsters will always attack a Hero before a Villager. As a Hero, you can fend off an attack by giving up one item per hit; Villagers don’t have that option. Whenever a defeated Hero or Villager is taken off the board, the Terror level is raised by one.
You win by successfully completing all the monster-beating tasks. You lose by either running out of Monster cards before all the monsters are defeated or by letting the Terror level rise too high. A few guidelines can help you combat the creatures:
- Be opportunistic about collecting items. Try to get as many as you can.
- Try to eliminate one monster as soon as possible to improve your odds.
- Above all, communicate and collaborate with the other players. This is essential!
